30 Days With Jesus (30)

THE GOSPELS - The postings in this category take a look 30 key moments in the life of Jesus found in the gospels. The pattern in this journal includes 3 components:  First, a summary of the story found in the passage.  Second, writing out a key truth and finally a personal application for your life journey.  A daily reading guide, 30 Days With Jesus, is available for download.  I encourage you to follow the readings and then add your comments to this journal.

Day 30 - Jesus' Instruction for the Church

Written by

Matthew 28:16–20; Luke 24:50–53

The Story: These passages of Scripture tell the story of Jesus giving final instructions to his disciples before he ascends into heaven, a spectacular site viewed by many.

The basic instruction was giving in Matthew 28:16-20 where Jesus gives a command to make disciples. He literally says that in the process of our going, we are to be making disciples of people. Introducing them to Jesus and seeing them through to making disciples on their own.

The Key Truth: The key truth is that of the Great Commission. This is the one thing that we are to be doing. The success factor of any Church is making disciples of Jesus by winning people to Christ and then mentoring them to maturity in Christ. The success factor is not in our music or productions, fancy facilities or big budgets. If we're not making disciples then we need to stop and re-evaluate everything that we're doing.

My Application: To take inventory of what i am doing in my life to make disciples of all nations, beginning in my own back yard.

Day 29 - The Resurrection of Jesus

Written by

John 20–21

The Story: This is the story of Jesus' resurrection from the dead, his appearance before Thomas and the scene at the shore of Tiberius where Jesus urged the disciples to cast their net on the other side.

At the sea of Tiberius, Jesus asked Peter if he loved him. He asked 3 times. In response to Peter's answers, Jesus told him to "feed my sheep."

The Key Truth: The key truth would naturally be the resurrection of Jesus for all of Christendom hinges on this truth. If Jesus did not rise from the dead, he then is not the victor over sin and death and our faith is null and void.

Praise God that Jesus did rise from the dead and that the gospels clearly document this fact.

My Application: My application is the same as what Jesus' request of Peter, to "feed my sheep" and to Follow Jesus (John 21:17-19). There is nothing else that I have to do.

Day 28 - The Tomb is Closed

Written by

John 19:17–42

The Story: This is the story of Jesus' crucifixion, death and burial. Upon the cross Pilate identified Jesus as the King of the Jews and posted it in all the languages that would have been used in that area.

Jesus was crucified on Friday night and laid in a new tomb close to the crucifixion site so that the burial would be complete on the day of preparation (day before the Passover).

The Key Truth: The key truth is the first part of the gospel message. That Jesus died for our sins according to the Gospels. Many prophecies were needed to be fulfilled in order for Jesus' death was to happen the way that it happened. All were fulfilled.

My Application: Christ died for my sins. My obligation and choice must be to embrace his love, ask his forgiveness of my sin and live to bring glory to his life.

Day 27 - Jesus' Trial

Written by

John 18:19-40; John 19:1-16

The Story: This passage is the story of Jesus trial, first by the High Priests, then Peter and then Pilate. The High Priests were looking for a reason to have him crucified, Peter denied him 3 times and Pilate, after trying to free him, gave in the Jews to have him crucified as a common criminal.

The Truths: A great truth is that of fulfilled prophecy. The events that took place were as described in the Old Testament. Because of God's love for man, he was willing to humble himself, obedient even to the point of death (Philippians 2:8).

In my Bible Study, "I AM - On Trial", I point out many of the illegalities of Jesus trial, yet Jesus humbled himself to these wicked hands, even to the point of death.  I AM - On Trial

My Application: My personal application is to embrace Christ's love for me and to be most grateful for His eternal gift of salvation.

Day 26 - Jesus' Ultimate Expression of Humility

Written by

Matthew 26:36–75

The Story: This portion of Scripture covers the events of:

  1. Jesus taking the disciples to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray
  2. Judas betraying Jesus and His arrest
  3. Appearing before the High Priest for Questioning. They find Jesus guilty of Blasphemy
  4. The story of Peter denying 3 times his acquaintance of Jesus

The Key Truth: A key truth that came to me was the Humility of Jesus. He was obedient to His Father's will. There was no struggle even though Jesus knew all that was about to happen to him. One thing that I noticed was that he even called Judas, "friend". To me that speaks of his humility.

My Application: I want to be obedient to the plans and desires of God for my life. Lord, show me what it is that you desire of me. I'm listening and ready to obey.

Day 25 - Jesus Call to Devotion

Written by

John 14:1-31; John 15:1-27

The Story: “You don’t have to be afraid”, is what Jesus is telling his disciples. “In fact, you should be happy because I am going to be with my Father, leaving the Holy Spirit to come and be with you. He will be your teacher and guide for all things God has called you to do.  If you truly love me, you will listen to the Holy Spirit and obey what He is telling you.

These are the words of Jesus just a short time before his arrest, trial and death. “I don’t have much time because the ruler of the world is out to get me.  He doesn’t have any power over me, but I will obey my Father.” Jesus is giving them their final teaching about what was about to happen and what they could expect after he died.

Jesus was calling on them to be witnesses of Him and what God had sent Him to do. Stay connected to me in all things because your strength and wisdom will come from the Holy Spirit,” was Jesus command.

The Key Truth: Jesus’ death on the cross was purposeful and powerful in that it was the forgiveness of our sins.  That was to be our message.  In order to be victorious in this life we needed to become separate from this world because the ruler of this world has every intention on seducing us away from our primary purpose in life. The Word of God is our guide through the Holy Spirit. Outside our devotion for the Word, there is no way that the nurturing Holy Spirit will be able to help us.

The Application: We need to check out our priorities and ambitions. We cannot be a lover of this world and be excited about Jesus’ return. The pull is in opposite directions. In this world the pull is to satisfy self but if our focus is on the day that Jesus will return, we will run a completely different race. A purpose to love God, love and tell others about God’s plan.  We will want to set aside every distraction that will keep us from that goal.

Day 24 - What Humility Looks Like

Written by

John 13:1–17; Matthew 26:17–35

The Story: This passage is about Jesus washing the disciples’ feet, including Judas, and says that this is an example for them to follow. Jesus then tells them that than no one is more important than their master.

The story continues as Jesus and the disciples eat the Passover meal. Jesus tells the disciples that one of them will betray them. Judas, of all people, asks Jesus if it is him. Following the Passover meal they go to the garden of Gethsemane. Jesus prophesies to Peter that he will deny Christ 3 times in the next few hours to come.

The Key Truth: In the hours leading up to his crucifixion, Jesus is prophesying the great truth of Jesus' substitutionary death (that Jesus paid the debt of our sin on the cross).

The Application: Within this story, I noticed that Jesus washed all the disciples feet, even Judas' feet, as an example of our humility and servanthood to one another. Personally, I would have bypassed his feet.

I need to understand what it means to be a servant of Christ, even to those that have betrayed me.

Day 17 - Of Forgiveness and Faithfulness

Written by

Matthew 18:21-35 - Matthew 19:1-15

The Story: In Matthew 18:21-35 we read a story of forgiveness in the context of what it looks like in the Kingdom of Heaven. The example is that of a servant that will not forgive the debts of others even though his master has forgiven him. This angered the master and rescinded his gracious offer and sent him to jail to be tortured. That's how God treats each of us if we refuse to forgive our brother.

In Matthew 19:1-15, Jesus answers the question of divorce. Even though Moses allowed divorce, it was because of hardened hearts. Jesus continued by saying that from the beginning, the intention was that there be no divorce. The only exception was that if there was marital unfaithfulness.

The Key Truth: In the first story the key would be that of forgiveness. We ought always to "let go" the offense of our brother.

The second story is that of marriage is of a man and woman and that this union is God's intention for life. The key truth would be that of faithfulness in marriage.

The Application: I need to examine my life to see if there are people that I have not forgiven. I need to release them.

In the second story my application is to keep my mind and emotions faithful in marriage.

Day 23 - Ego-Centric Religion

Written by

Matthew 21:1–27

The Story: This passage opens with Jesus entering the city upon a donkey and people are giving him a King's entrance. Jesus goes to the temple where people have gathered to sell their wares to which Jesus chases them out with a whip. The religious leaders are indignant and want Jesus to tell them by what authority he is doing these things. They had tried to trick him into a confession to which they could arrest him for blasphemy.

The Key Truth: In the days approaching Passover, Jesus presents himself to the city as Messiah. People had changed Passover into something that brought them personal gain. Jesus turned it back into a holy day that had brought glory to God.

My Application: The religious leaders of Jesus' day were spiritually ego-centric rather than God centered. I need my focus to be on God and lead others to change their focus if it is not on God and equip those that have made the choice to make Christ Lord of their lives.

Day 22 - The Resurrection Demonstration

Written by

John 11:1–44

The Story: This is the story of raising Lazarus, Jesus' friend, from the dead. At this time there were people out to see Jesus arrested, primarily in Jerusalem, but Jesus went in broad day light to raise Lazarus from the dead. Jesus performed this miracle to show God's glory (John 11:4).

The Key Truth: For me a key truth would be that Jesus is the resurrection and the life (John 11:25, 26). Life was in him and no one could take it from him. In this setting he gave life back to Lazarus.

My Application: I see a key application in John 11:27 where Lazarus' sister, Martha, gave testimony of who Jesus was. She had an authentic belief of Christ's reality and that nothing was impossible for him. I want that reality in my life.
