Read James 1:5-8

The Story: James 1:4 lets us know that if we are mature in the faith, we will need nothing. The very next phrase in James 1:5 says, "if you need wisdom..."  James is not contradicting himself, he's simply giving a case in point.  Maturity in faith is humility before God.

I like how Chuck Swindoll defined spiritual maturity:

"A grown-up believer displays wisdom, self-discipline, and commitment to a consistent walk with Christ.  He or she is determined to obey God regardless of the cost and to seek regular nourishment from His Word.  Also, the mature Christian strives to reach out and care for others, whether they be friend or foe, believer or unbeliever.  Such an individual willingly shoulders his or her responsibilities with a contagiously positive attitude."  - Church Swindoll.

The mature person will naturally gravitate to God with his questions.  In your ongoing communication with God, he is naturally asked when there is a question. He is not one of many sources for wisdom, he is the source.  The person that polls the opinion of many, with God being only one, is illustrated like a man being thrown around on a boat in a tropical storm. Few circumstances will feel less stable.

The Key Truth: Without faith it is impossible to please God. Hebrews 11:6

Today's Application: Start your day with God in communion with him.  Make sure you take time to read his Word and then time to listen to Him.  Speak to God of your day and ask for wisdom throughout the day.  Continue to talk to God throughout the day.

For Conversation: What does your day look like?  What type of decisions will you need to make today? How can you apply James 1:5-8 to your day?  Then, thank God at the end of day in how he provided wisdom.
