30 Days With Jesus (9)

THE GOSPELS - The postings in this category take a look 30 key moments in the life of Jesus found in the gospels. The pattern in this journal includes 3 components:  First, a summary of the story found in the passage.  Second, writing out a key truth and finally a personal application for your life journey.  A daily reading guide, 30 Days With Jesus, is available for download.  I encourage you to follow the readings and then add your comments to this journal.

Day 9 - Matthew 12:1-13; Matthew 12:22-45

Written by Gerry Peters

Matthew 12:1–13; Matthew 12:22–45

The Story: The Pharisees were trying to trap Jesus around their ideas of the Sabbath. Jesus says, "(12)How much more valuable is a person than a sheep! So it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.” (13) Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out and it was restored, as healthy as the other.

In Matthew 12:22-45, the Pharisees decide that Jesus is actually from Beelzebub and Jesus describes the great folly of that statement. Jesus takes it further by describing what we understand as the unpardonable sin. Jesus concludes by prophesying the death and resurrection

The Key Truth: I think one of the key truths was differentiating from the kingdom of heaven and of this earth. The Pharisees had sold themselves out to the spirit of the earth and were blinded to Jesus' teaching.

My Application:
"For the mouth speaks from what fills the heart." I want to fill my mind and heart with the truth of Jesus Christ.

Day 8 - Matthew 8:1–13; Luke 7:11–17; Luke 7:36–50

The Story: In Matthew 8:1-13, The leper and centurion having a strong faith in Christ to heal.
In Luke 7:11-17 Jesus came across a funeral procession. He had compassion on the mother and asked the man to rise. Another spectacular miracle.
In Luke 7:36-50, Jesus attends a pharisees house and a woman washes Jesus feet with her tears and anoints them with an expensive perfume.

These passages have in common: The power of Jesus to heal. Each one unique. Another thing in common was how Jesus responded to love. Centurions love for servant, mother's love for son and woman's love for Jesus.

The Key Truth: If I had to pick a truth, I would have to say the Key Truth is about Jesus' power to heal and to do the miraculous.

The Application:  My application has to be the same as all the recipients of the miraculous, they had great faith in Jesus to be able to things that were out of this world. I need to have faith in Jesus to do the miraculous in my life.

Day 7 - Luke 6:17–46

Written by Gerry Peters

Day 7 - Luke 6:17–46

The Story: Many people were coming to Jesus because they knew he was "out of this world" with healing power. During that time, Jesus chose to teach the disciples about Kingdom life. Letting go of this world and embracing the principles of the kingdom.

The Key Truth: A key truth that stood out to me was that of Humility. If your life is void of the quality of humility, you will have trouble letting go of this world and what it has to offer. At the end of Jesus' teaching he talks a lot about "not judging". Again, you can't apply that if your life is filled with pride.

The Application: The application for me is to stop judging others. I have enough problems of my own to work on before i start pointing out the problems of others. I really need to start a life of blessing others.

Day 6 - Luke 5:1–11; Matthew 9:9–13

Written by Gerry Peters

Day 6 - Luke 5:1–11; Matthew 9:9–13

The Story: The two stories about Jesus teaching from a boat. He asked for the fishermen to pull out to the deep and when they lowered their nets they caught an extraordinary amount of fish. large enough to start sinking a couple boats and causing Peter to fall down before him and confess himself to be a sinner. Jesus told him to become a follower.

The second story is about Jesus going to Matthews house for a meal. He asked Matthew to be a follower. Pharisees were critical of Jesus going to his house but replied that he had come for the sinners and not the holier than thou

The Key Truth: The two stories have a common truth. Jesus asks all people to become followers of him. To make Jesus Lord of their lives.

The Application: what aspect of my life am i still hanging on to and have not yielded it to Jesus Christ. It doesn't matter what it is, Jesus is asking for our whole life to be yielded to him.

Day 5 - Luke 4:14-30

Written by Gerry Peters

Day 5 - Luke 4:14–30

The Story: Jesus returns to his home town and goes to the Synagogue on the Sabbath. He is given the Scroll of Isaiah to read and he reads a passage that prophecies the coming of Messiah. When he finished reading, he told them that he was the Messiah. They were filled with rage, primarily because to them he was blaspheming. They tried to kill Jesus but walked walked away and they were able to do nothing.

The Key Truth:The Primary truth is that Jesus announced himself as Messiah. Jesus is Christ. He said it himself.

The Application: For me it all comes down to believing that Jesus is the Messiah. He is my Saviour. I never want to get simply casual about it or take it for granted.

Day 4 - John 2:1-11; John 4:1-26

Written by Gerry Peters
Day 4 - John 2:1-11; John 4:1-26
The Story
The story in John 2:1-11 is about Jesus turning the water into wine.
The story in John 4:1-26 is when Jesus speaks to the Samaritan woman at the well and introduces himself as the Messiah.

The Key Truth

Something that both passages have in common is that people were thirsty. In the second passage Jesus tells the Samaritan woman that He alone can satisfy their spiritual thirst.

The Application
When I'm spiritually thirsty I need to be reminded that the only thing that will satisfy is Jesus, primarily through His Word in the Scriptures. It's easy to satisfy this thirst through Worship experiences or Church programs. All of these are empty without reading and learning more about Jesus, deepening our relationship with Him.

Day 3 - Matthew 3:1-17; Matthew 4:1-11

Written by Gerry Peters

Matthew 3:1-17, Matthew 4:1-11, Mark 1:1-13

The Story: 4 stories are told in this passage
1. John the Baptist is prophesying that Christ was coming and they needed to make their hearts right with God.
2. John the Baptist preaching against the self-righteousness of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
3. The Baptism of Jesus.
4. The temptations of Jesus in the wilderness.

Bible Study Note: In Mark 1:12, 13 it says that Jesus was with the “wild animals”. Here’s what interesting. Mark was writing from Rome in around 62AD, the time when Nero was massacring believers in most horrible ways. He would take Christians and wrap them in lamb skins and then release wild dogs upon them.  Mark is alluding to the truth that Jesus was with the wild animals in the wilderness.  The message Mark is giving is that Jesus knows what you’re going through and is with you even when you are wrapped in animal skins.

The Key Truth: While there are many truths in this passage, the one that stood out for me was heart quality of Humility. John preached against the arrogance of the Pharisees and Sadducees, Jesus' first expression as the Messiah was to humble himself in baptism and then Jesus' rejection of all that the Devil offered him. Jesus rather used Scripture to express his desire only to Worship God rather than gaining stuff for himself.

The Application:
In all that I do, it needs to be as an act of worship to God and nothing to earn status on this earth.

Day 2 - Matthew 1:18-25

Written by Gerry Peters

Matthew 1:18-25

The Story: The story is about Joseph. Before he married Mary he found out she was pregnant. He was going to let her go but an angel came to him and told him that the baby was actually a miracle of the Holy Spirit and not of any sexual relationship. Because of that, Joseph was to take Mary as his wife. Joseph did what the angel said.

The Key Truth: I think the basic truth centers on the fact that Jesus was born of a virgin and not because of any human sexual relationship.

The Application:
The application to me would be to strengthen by belief that the birth of Jesus was in fact a work of the Holy Spirit and born sinless. There is also an application from Joseph's obedience. When I hear the Holy Spirit speaking to me, I ought to obey immediately.

Day 1 - Isaiah 53

Written by Gerry Peters

Scripture Passage: Isaiah 53

The Story: The Prophetic Story of Christ. Isaiah 53 is the story of Christ, his birth, life, the treatment of the people against him, his death, burial - with criminals and the grave of the rich - his resurrection to to life which was full and effective for the forgiveness of our sins.

The Key Truth:This is a thorough prophetic announcement of Christ as Messiah.

The Application for Me: I can trust the Scriptures as my sole and final authority for life. This prophecy was proved 100% true. Hence, I can trust the rest of Scripture.
